Canine poliovirus infection is a worldwide acute disease with high morbidity and mortality in dogs, and belongs to the second most common diseases in dogs, with the distinctive characteristics of rapid onset and high mortality. Acute or subacute heart failure in pups with intrauterine infection and perinatal infection is a common manifestation of the disease. Three subtypes of the virus exist, CPV-2a, CPV-2b, and CUC-2c, and all canines are susceptible, with infection and transmission occurring primarily through the faecal-oral route. The faeces of infected dogs carry large amounts of the virus. After an incubation period of 4-7 days, animals with intestinal disease suddenly vomit and become anorexic, and may develop depression and fever. diarrhoea occurs within 48 hours, usually bloody and, in severe cases, markedly so. The faeces have a foul odour. Complicated intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections may cause the condition to worsen. Infected dogs deteriorate rapidly due to dehydration and weight loss, and severely infected animals die within 3 days. In a small number of dogs, infection with canine microvirus can cause myocarditis, in which puppies infected before 8 weeks of age usually show acute heart failure.
Canine coronavirus disease is an acute intestinal infection caused by canine coronavirus and is characterised by vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and easy relapse. Infection is mainly transmitted from sick dogs through the digestive and respiratory tracts, including the gastrointestinal tract, faeces, pollutants, and the respiratory tract. The incubation period is 1 to 5 days, and the clinical symptoms vary in severity. The main manifestations are vomiting and diarrhoea, and severely ill dogs are mentally unstable, lethargic, with reduced or eliminated appetite, and most of them do not have body temperature changes. Thirst, dry nose, vomiting, diarrhoea for several days. The faeces are gruel-like or watery, red or dark brown, or yellow-green, foul-smelling, mixed with mucus or a little blood. The white blood cell count is normal, and the disease lasts for 7 to 10 days. Some sick dogs, especially puppies, die within 1 to 2 days after the onset of the disease, while adult dogs rarely die. Currently, clinical tests for canine coronavirus infection are electron microscopic observation of faeces, serum neutralisation tests and molecular biology. Suspected canine coronavirus infection can be rapidly screened for using latex immunochromatographic assays.
Canine rotavirus (CRV) infection is an enteric infection primarily of young dogs. Most people of all ages can be infected. Rotavirus can cause enteritis in young domestic animals, with a short incubation period generally within 24 hours of onset, but adult dogs are generally latently infected and lack obvious symptoms. The disease occurs mostly in the cold season. Poor hygiene conditions can often trigger the disease. Severe diarrhoea often occurs in puppies, with drainage-like to mucus-like faeces, which can last for 8~10 days. Affected animals have reduced appetite, are depressed, and pass light-coloured, semi-liquid or pasty faeces.
